Robin is the national bird of Britain. The male and female robin are similar in colouration, with an orange breast and face lined with grey. Its upper parts are brown and belly is white. Its bill and eyes are black. The robin is diurnal, although has been reported to be active hunting insects on moonlight nights or near artificial light at night. Male robins are noted for their highly agrressive territorial behaviour. Because of high mortality in the first year of life, a robin has an average life expectancy of 1.1 years. The robin has appeared on many christmas postage stamps. The robin produces a fluting, warbling song during the breeding season.
