2020 Khel Ratna to Rohit Sharma

The Ministry of Sports has announced the National Sports Awards 2020 in the various categories. 

Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma, table tennis star Manika Batra, India hockey women’s skipper Rani Rampal, Asian Games gold medalist wrestler Vinesh Phogat and Paralympic gold medalist high jumper Mariappan Thangavelu are the recipients of 2020 Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, which is India’s highest sporting honour.

Dhyan Chand Award will be given to Kuldip Singh Bhullar and Jincy Philip for Athletics. Dhyan Chand Award is given for life time contribution to sports development.

The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna is the highest sporting honour of India. The award is named after Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister who served the office from 1984 to 1989. The award comprises a medallion, a certificate, and a cash prize of ₹7.5 lakh. 

Ashok Lavasa, the new Vice-president of ADB

Ashok Lavasa who served as Election Commissioner of India, has now joined the Asian Development Bank as its vice-president for private sector operations and public-private partnerships.

Lavasa, a 1980-batch IAS officer of the Haryana cadre, was retired as Union Finance Secretary. He  was appointed an Election Commissioner in January 2018.

Ashok Lavasa was born on 21 October 1957 in Rajasthan.

Rajiv Kumar, the new Election Commissioner

Rajiv Kumar, former finance secretary, has been appointed as Election Commissioner On August 21, 2020. He is an IAS officer of the 1984 batch from the Jharkhand cadre, had retired as the Finance Secretary in February this year. 

Satya Pal Malik the new Governor of Meghalaya

Satya Pal Malik was appointed as the Governor of Meghalaya. Shri. Malik was the Governor of Goa previously. He served as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir in 2018-19 period during which  the constitutional decision to abrogate Article 370 was implemented.

He was elected as Member of Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh in 1974 and was elected as Rajya Sabha representative in 1980-86. He served as Governor of Bihar in 2017-18. In 2018, he was given the additional charge to serve as Governor of Odisha.

Kamala Harris to US Vice-presidentship

The Indian-origin American politician Kamala Harris has been being officially nominated by the Democratic party as its nominee for Vice-president of America. She is the first Indian American and Black woman to be fielded for the second highest political office in the US by a major political party. The Presidential Candidate is Joe Biden. 

Kamala was born in Oakland, California. She is the district attorney from San Francisco and former attorney general of California. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, a biologist and breast cancer researcher was hailed from Madras (Chennai), India.
